The awards are designed to encourage the writing, publishing, and dissemination of books that treat topics related to ethnic minorities and relations sensitively and accurately. The Carter G. Woodson Book Award Subcommittee has selected the elementary and secondary level book winners. In addition, four honor book awards elementary and secondary recipients have been selected.
